Program Notes

The concertino/ripieno structure of this Concerto Grosso is faithfully modeled after the first movement of Corelli’s first Concerto Grosso, just with the Allegros and Largos swapped. I was inspired by the liberties that Baroque notation encourages players to take and decided to embrace that spirit with an open instrumentation and pitch choices, rather than ornamentation. Ultimately, this piece is about highlighting as many individuals in an ensemble as possible while also fostering a musician-initiated frenetic sound mass.
